Pug FAQs
If you're considering getting a Pug, insuring your Pug or switching insurer, find out everything you need to know about the cover you'll get with Napo.
Should I insure my Pug?
Absolutely. Pugs are prone to a number of breed-specific health issues, and insurance can help cover unexpected vet bills. At Napo we offer comprehensive cover that includes those common genetic conditions, as well as dental care, third-party liability, and much more.
What common health conditions affect Pugs?
Pugs are known to suffer from several hereditary/congenital conditions, as well as more general ones:
Corneal (eye) ulcers, eye injuries and infections
BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome) – this causes breathing issues for flat-faced dog breeds, often requiring surgery
Skin allergies and irritations, potential digestive allergies too
Hip and joint issues that could progress to arthritis
Epilepsy and neurological conditions
The good news is that we cover all of them. Choose between medical cover totalling £2k, £4k, £8k, £12k and £16k per year.
Do you cover BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome)?
Yes, we can cover BOAS if it wasn’t present or symptomatic 24 months before your policy started and during any waiting periods. It's important to insure your Pug early to improve chances of cover.
Is dental treatment included for Pugs?
Yes, dental is included in our comprehensive cover. To qualify, you need to get your Pug’s gnashers checked once a year. And make sure to act on recommended dental care within 6 months of your vet suggesting it. Remember that dental and gum disease can be detected way in advance of your Pug showing lots of painful symptoms, so it’s best to get those checkups and nip it in the bud.
Additionally, it’s very common for Pugs to grow crooked teeth (malocclusion). This makes dental disease very prevalent. Sometimes they have teeth taken out or bite re-shaping therapy. If you have a Pug or you’re getting a Pug, it’s important to make sure you have dental cover from the start so that any dental issues aren’t seen as a pre-existing condition.
What common behavioural conditions affect Pugs?
Pugs are a quirky and ancient breed! They bring plenty of joy, but can also develop behaviours that need some course-correction. These issues are fairly common and often linked to their physical health and frustration levels. If they’re in any pain or have shortness of breathing, they’re likely to show more sensitivity. We commonly hear about:
Reactivity and barking
Separation anxiety
Leash reactivity
Noise sensitivity
Resource guarding
Underlying pain and discomfort can be the source of these!!!
We cover these issues if they are diagnosed by a vet or qualified behaviourist, and not defined as pre-existing. To keep both you and your dog confident and happy, we also recommend doing lots of training research and making use of our free resources. You got this!
Can I get insurance for my senior Pug?
Yes, we offer cover for older Pugs! Just note that once your pet turns 9, a 20% co-payment on vet fees applies. This means that we ask you to contribute 20% of the vet bills, on top of your excess. It helps us keep monthly premiums relatively low, while still paying the vast majority of the vet bills.
Do you pay the vet directly or reimburse me?
Whichever you prefer. We can pay claims out directly to you or to the vet, as long as they are set up with us. Many customers prefer for us to pay the vets directly so they don’t have to cover the upfront costs.
A note from Napo, our original founder
Hi! I’m Napoleon, but everyone calls me Napo. Like all small Dachshunds, I’m remembered for my enormous personality.
My owner JP (the human founder of Napo) struggled to find good insurance to cover my health needs as I got older. And he loved me so much that when we had to say goodbye, he created an inclusive pet insurance company in my memory 💙
