Piper’s story

“No hurdles, no fuss. Excellent service!”

“No hurdles, no fuss. Excellent service!”

When Piper the Labrador developed a lump on her chest, her owner got her straight to the vet for a biopsy.

10 days later, she went in for the removal procedure. She was discharged by teatime, and the vet’s claim was accepted and paid by the end of that very same day. A relief that Piper’s owner could just focus on her recovery!

Labrador Retriever FAQs

If you're considering getting a Lab or Lab cross, insuring your Lab or switching insurer, find out everything you need to know about the cover you'll get with Napo.

Should I insure my Labrador?

Absolutely. Labradors are prone to a number of breed-specific health issues, and insurance can help cover unexpected vet bills. At Napo we offer comprehensive cover that includes those common genetic conditions, as well as dental care, third-party liability, and much more. Getting your insurance sorted with us when they’re young means they’ll have cover for life.

What common health conditions affect Labradors?

Labs are known to suffer from several hereditary/congenital conditions, as well as more general ones:

  • Hip and joint issues – hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and arthritis can flare up and affect mobility

  • Skin and ear infections, allergies or irritations

  • Eye complaints

  • Gastro (upset tummy) – they can be food-curious and also sensitive

  • Heart issues – older labs can need some extra care for their hearts and general wellbeing

The good news is that we cover all of them. Choose between health cover totalling £2k, £4k, £8k, £12k and £16k per year.

Do you cover joint dysplasia and replacements for Labradors?

Yes. Being such high-energy, athletic dogs, Labradors can suffer from joint issues from early on in life. Napo Labradors experiencing joint issues get their healthcare covered from diagnostics and medication, to surgery, complimentary therapies like hydro and physio to aid recovery, and any other specialist referrals. If conditions worsen into chronic arthritis and require joint replacements, these are covered too.

Is dental treatment included for Labradors?

Yes, dental is included in our comprehensive cover. To qualify, you need to get your Lab’s gnashers checked once a year. And make sure to act on vet-recommended dental care within 6 months. Remember that dental and gum disease can be detected way in advance of your Lab showing painful symptoms, so it’s best to get those checkups and nip it in the bud.

As big chewers, it’s extremely important to look after your Lab’s teeth and get ahead of any potential issues!

What common behavioural conditions affect Labradors?

Labradors are some of the friendliest and most loyal dogs around. On the whole, they tend not to have major behavioural conditions. But, when specific issues beyond general training arise, they are covered under Napo insurance.

The most common issue that may need behavioural support is chewing, coming from anxiety or their innate food curiosity. Labradors are big on food and using their mouths so either chewing or stealing food could end up being issues.

Likewise, socialisation issues for overexuberant Lab puppies can be supported.

We cover these issues if they are diagnosed by a vet or qualified behaviourist, and not defined as pre-existing. To keep both you and your dog confident and happy, we also recommend doing lots of training research and making use of our free resources. You got this!

Can I get insurance for my senior Labrador?

Yes, we offer cover for older Labs! Just note that once your pet turns 9, a 20% co-payment on vet fees applies. This means that we ask you to contribute 20% of the vet bills, on top of your excess. It helps us keep monthly premiums relatively low, while still paying the majority of the vet bills.

Do you pay the vet directly or reimburse me?

Whichever you prefer. We can pay claims out directly to you or to the vet, as long as they are set up with us. Many customers prefer for us to pay the vets directly so they don’t have to cover the upfront costs.

A note from Napo, our original founder

Hi! I’m Napoleon, but everyone calls me Napo. Like all small Dachshunds, I’m remembered for my enormous personality.

My owner JP (the human founder of Napo) struggled to find good insurance to cover my health needs as I got older. And he loved me so much that when we had to say goodbye, he created an inclusive pet insurance company in my memory 💙
